“The sun equals light, which equal knowledge, which equals consciousness”
Western nutrition, fitness experts and foodies divide the year into 4 main seasons : winter, spring, summer and rain. It works perfectly for them but for indian climate the calendar divides the year into 6 basic seasons. As per Ayurveda optimizing health means eating food that balances elements of each season. There are two main season : dry and wet and both of them making two seasons of Winter and two of Summer. Add to this your normal Spring and Autumn and you have 6. Dakshinayana and Uttarayana (Two main seasons)
Food preparation techniques, ingredients used, combination of ingredients and consumption time – all adds up to our good health. Thats where i consistently correct my patients rather nag them by saying, “eat FOOD that is seasonal, cheap , local and doesn’t need an advertisement.”
The atmospheric changes caused by the transition from dry to wet season creates a disturbance in the equilibrium of the mahabhutas (five elements) and gunas (qualities) in our bodies. This disturbance first leads to the accumulation of doshas (derangements / hormonal disbalances). This is the first stage of disease. That’s why we say, ” be careful during seasonal change as you might get cough, cold, fever, acidity or even constipation. Its on our own ignorance to continue the plight into disease formation after the a slight hint of cold, acidity or constipation by lifestyle and diet habits that are not beneficial for balance of that season. For eg, ” we might continue to drink hot caffine during summers – which further dehydrates the body or increases gas in the body.”
Our bodies constitutes the causes of time, season, taste (in medicines and diet), and the vitiation of the doshas and bodily strength. The deep understanding and awareness of this allows someone to create health, high immune function and ward most possibilities of becoming ill and its effects.
As the season changes, it guides me as a doctor to foresee what disease will most likely occur in someone’s future due to most patients have no time to change habits as per season and continue the same habits in lead them to dehydration, constipation and creates a platform for diseases.
